Denmark and the Faroes submit claim for extended continental shelf south of the Faroe Islands
On Thursday December 2, 2010, the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Government of the Faroes submitted documentation for extended continental shelf outside the 200 nautical mile limit south of the Faroe Islands to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS). The claimed area extends 820 nautical miles south of the Faroe Islands and covers an area of c. 608.000 km2 on the Faroe-Rockall plateau. The submission concerns to the second out of five areas, where the Kingdom of Denmark potentially can document extended continental shelf. The first partial submission - relating to the area north of the Faroe Islands - was delivered in April 2009. Acquisition of data and preparation of submissions is still ongoing in the areas north, north-east and south of Greenland. Claims to all five areas have to be submitted to the CLCS before the end of 2014.
